Project Khon Kaen (PKK, as it’s affectionately known) is SMSL’s annual trip to Khon Kaen in Thailand for our members to carry out volunteer work in its surrounding villages. A group of 15 to 20 students spend a fortnight in a village chosen by the project leaders, and o n the agenda are basic health check-ups for the villagers (e.g. blood glucose tests and measurement of height and weight) educational talks and skits (all in Thai!) geared at the major health or social risks facing the village. Further activities include teaching English to the children and organizing fun-filled and educational activities for them while the students are there.

This year PKK will take place in the first two weeks of August, and prior to the actual trip there will be a period of preparation in the last two or three weeks of July in Singapore – this will encompass things like Thai lessons and skit rehearsals and other training for activities on the trip. The trip really is a great opportunity to help a community in need, and to learn more about a different way of life; participants in previous years have found it incredibly fulfilling and worthwhile – not to mention great fun!

SingHealth & The National Healthcare Group (NHG) are the 2 health providers in Singapore. Between them, they are in charge of the various hospitals spread in and around Singapore, taking care of Singapore’s public primary and tertiary healthcare.

The purpose of their visit is to meet medical/dental students from all years, especially those who eventually would like to work in Singapore. This event includes everyone- Singaporeans and non-Singaporeans as well.

We would encourage you to attend this event, should you wish to work in Singapore in the near future as a medical/dental professional, a clinician scientist or have plans to embark on an elective in Singapore.

The agenda for the day includes a brief presentation conducted by them and subsequently, the floor is open to discussion (much like a Q & A). After the discussion, we would adjourn for tea.

Many of you may have met them on separate occasions in Singapore this summer, however, this marks a rare opportunity to meet them both together and ask them any questions which you may have.

The 12th SMSL committee invites you to the 2006 Fresher’s Tea

The buzz of London. A maze of corridors and buildings. Too many parties. And hundreds of lost handshakes and fleeting faces. Confused? Well here is the place to be. A casual gathering of freshers and seniors from all over London to exchange thoughts and advice on work and play in the most metropolitan city in the world. Based around a theme of Drama, the day will involve a series of fun and “dramatic” games to get to know each other. This is also the perfect opportunity to ask seniors about the opportunities in service and attachments in Singapore, organized by SMSL and learn more about the aims and objectives of the society as well as the work of the committee.

So you know where to be! Food and drinks will be provided and organized by the university representatives, so feel free to approach them if you’d like to help or come together as a group or grab your friends and come down. Please give us a call if you have any queries. If for no other reason, I hear the jelly will be quite a hit!

The attachment, which was opened to preclinical and clinicals was a blast. We learnt, we observed and within the scope of our abilities, we helped. What a week. It certainly puts what we are learning at university into some perspective.

This event is held every year and is exactly what it says- a gathering. So it’s informal and held at one of our member’s homes (with many thanks!). We are fortunate this year to have the NHG come meet us and also give a presentation on the likes of working in Singapore with them. They also gave us some souvenirs- the stuffed bears were a hit!
